What is Biological Bone Grafting?
What does it mean when you need a dental bone graft? Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that is essential for patients who have areas of bone loss in their jaw. This can happen because of a variety of different reasons, from gum disease (also called Periodontal Disease) to having a tooth extracted. Bone loss can cause shifting of your teeth causing difficulty chewing trauma to your other teeth and can also cause your face to have a sunken in look. It can make placing implants very difficult or even impossible because there is nothing for the implant to anchor into. Dr. Cornelius bone graft during most surgical procedures that require extracting teeth. This allows for a much healthier healing and makes you an excellent candidate for placing an implant to replace the extracted tooth either same day or in the future.
Am I a Good Candidate for Biological Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting can help improve your oral health and quality of life. For many patients, realizing that they can replace a missing tooth can bring great joy as they will be able to smile and eat food again that may have been restricted while missing teeth. For Dr. Cornelius to determine if you are a good candidate, he takes X-rays and a CBCT (3D imaging) and then does a thorough exam. With the 3D imaging, he will be able to see how much bone loss you have and where the best places are to place the mineral bone grafting.
What if I need my tooth pulled?
Dr. Cornelius has years of extensive training in surgical extractions and has recently completed training in Biological extractions. During the extraction procedure, he will draw your blood and use your own blood to make Platelet Rich Fibrin, also known as PRF. After drawing your blood, he then places the vials in a centrifuge and spins down the blood, giving him PRF. Then he mixes the PRF with the mineral bone graft material creating a substance called “Sticky Bone”. Next he will pack the area of the extraction site with this Sticky Bone and then suture it up. Because you are using your own body’s platelets, the chance of your body rejecting it is almost zero percent. After the extraction, he uses ozone to detoxify the surgical site and stimulate blood flow, as well as help enhance your overall healing. He might recommend IV Therapy after your procedure to help your body heal as efficiently and healthy as possible with additional vitamins and minerals.
What Can I Expect for Recovery?
Recovery time varies depending on each individual patient. Recovery from biological bone grafting surgery is typically relatively quick and easy. Most people feel well enough to return to normal work or activities within a day. It is essential to follow all of the instructions Dr. Cornelius will provide you for post operative care and recovery. These instructions will help ensure the best possible healing and outcome. We are always happy to answer any questions you might have along the way of your treatment.
